“For it isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” -Eleanor Roosevelt
The Newport Community Justice Center exists to empower community members to restore relationships that have been harmed by conflict; to work toward addressing the underlying roots of conflict and crime; and to improve the quality of life in our community.
Why Is This Important?
When a law is broken, when an argument occurs between neighbors, when children are bullied in school, the inherent trust within the community is harmed. The Justice Center works to repair this harm and rebuild the trust.
How Is This Achieved?
The Newport Community Justice Center employs restorative justice practices that focus on accountability, responsibility and working to reestablish the trust between the victim, offender and the community. The Community Justice Center shifts the focus of justice from retribution to
• The victim finds repair.
• The offender finds responsibility.
• The community finds restoration.
